Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting
This course is for those who have high levels of proficiency in Chinese and English and want to develop their skills to become professional translators or interpreters, and offers written translation, oral interpreting and film and video subtitling in a single programme; it is designed to sharpen translation and interpreting skills, introduce students to industry-standard translation and interpreting software, and give them practical experience in using their skills and knowledge; the course emphasises hands-on training; students work with native speakers in developing their ability to move accurately and quickly between English and Chinese in a variety of contexts (business, legal and court, public sector, conference), using different interpreting modes (consecutive, liaison, simultaneous), and through different media (on-site, teleconferencing, telephone); students learn how to use their language skills to translate, interpret and subtitle effectively in a culturally-sensitive way; students develop the practical language and key skills necessary for employment in professional translation, interpreting and subtitling; they learn to translate and interpret quickly and accurately in unprepared contexts, the kind often encountered in professional translation and interpreting.
Research councils and some University of Essex studentships available.
