Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting

This course is for those who have high levels of proficiency in Chinese and English and want to develop their skills to become professional translators or interpreters, and offers written translation, oral interpreting and film and video subtitling in a single programme; it is designed to sharpen translation and interpreting skills, introduce students to industry-standard translation and interpreting software, and give them practical experience in using their skills and knowledge; the course emphasises hands-on training; students work with native speakers in developing their ability to move accurately and quickly between English and Chinese in a variety of contexts (business, legal and court, public sector, conference), using different interpreting modes (consecutive, liaison, simultaneous), and through different media (on-site, teleconferencing, telephone); students learn how to use their language skills to translate, interpret and subtitle effectively in a culturally-sensitive way; students develop the practical language and key skills necessary for employment in professional translation, interpreting and subtitling; they learn to translate and interpret quickly and accurately in unprepared contexts, the kind often encountered in professional translation and interpreting.

Entry requirements

Our applicants may be considered if they possess the following: a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree and IELTS 7.5 (with 6.0 in writing) for native speakers of Chinese, and a qualification in translation and interpreting, or an equivalent level qualification in Chinese (for native speakers of English), and a qualification in translation and interpreting.

Course modules

Modules include: Bilateral interpreting; consecutive interpreting; principles of translation and interpreting; simultaneous interpreting; subtitling Principles And Practice); technical translation; written translation; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, you will work on a dissertation or individual project included in your final grade.
