Translation and Literature

This course is for those who love literature and languages and would like to translate literature professionally. It introduces students to the techniques of professional literary translation and develops their personal translation skills allowing them to translate literary works accurately from one language to another. The course involves English and 1 of French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. students can be native speakers of any of these languages as they will learn to translate to and from both languages. Modules offered by the Departments of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies, and Language and Linguistics are taken with a unique emphasis on hands-on practice in translation. Students work with native speakers in developing their ability to move accurately and quickly between their chosen language and English. The course combines training in translation skills and the development of understanding of the use of language in different literary genres.
