Structural Engineering with Management
These programmes will provide you with a solid understanding of the whole process of structural design, analysis and operation. You will discover how to design and manage the dynamic behaviour of structures using state of the art hardware and software for performance assessment, measurement, and instrumentation to withstand normal and extreme operational loads. The programmes are taught by our internationally leading academic team with expertise in structural performance analysis and health monitoring, structural dynamics, control, infrastructure management, systems and informatics. Successful graduates will be equipped with specialist skills increasingly demanded by employing infrastructure consultants, contractors, operators, and government agencies and can expect to progress into international senior level positions in civil, construction and environmental industries.
A minimum 2.1 Honours degree in the physical sciences eg computer science, engineering or physics is required. English language requirements: for applicants whose 1st language is not English: IELTS: 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any section; or TOEFL IBT: overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing; 21 for listening; 22 for reading; and 23 for speaking; or Pearson Test of English: 58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills; Cambridge English: Advanced and Proficiency: overall score 176 with no less than 169 in any section; applicants with lower English language test scores may be able to take pre-sessional English at INTO University of Exeter prior to commencing their programme.
Core modules: linear systems and structural analysis: background theory; structural design: structural elements and whole structures; vibration engineering: designing for vibration serviceability of slender, lightweight or vibration-sensitive structures and processes; earthquake engineering: background theory for predicting response to seismic action and technology for its mitigation; conceptual design of bridges: structural, geotechnical and performance aspects; conceptual design of buildings: structural, geotechnical and performance aspects. Optional modules: computational structural analysis; strategic management: strategic analysis and theories supported by case studies; asset management: financing infrastructure and utilisation of contemporary technology; active and passive structural control: design for vibration mitigation; structural health monitoring: instrumentation, data management, decision support.
