Creative Arts in Education

The programme offers an integrated approach to the educational theory and practice of all 4 art forms (drama, music, dance and visual art), with the ability to specialise in 1 of these subject areas. The programme develops knowledge and understanding of arts education and the central role of creativity in arts teaching and learning. Opportunities for hands on experiences through participation in educational projects, artist-led workshops and visits to schools and other educational settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have obtained a 1st degree equivalent to at least a UK 2.1 Honours in Education and/or arts related studies. Applicants are also expected to have at least 3 months practical experience of teaching, coordinating or facilitating arts learning in educational settings such as schools, colleges or community projects. Applicants also require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: teaching and learning (art/dance/drama/music); creativity and the arts; introduction to educational research; dissertation. Option modules: the arts and educational futures; arts in the curriculum; international perspectives: inclusion, disability and diversity; critical perspectives in inclusive and special education; foreign language testing and assessment; developing and appropriate language teaching methodology; teaching English to young learners; language course, syllabus design and English for special purposes; evaluating and designing print and e-learning materials for TESOL; developing language teachers.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods vary and include written assignments, presentations, group work and peer assessment.
