Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
This is an intensive summer programme. The programme is aimed at teachers of all education levels hoping to further develop their TESOL training. A Master's in TESOL has international recognition and is seen as an important professional qualification worldwide to enable TESOL teachers to enhance their career prospects. In particular, it is often seen as an important entry qualification for educators who want to work at University level. During the programme students develop their understanding of theoretical issues in language teaching and the implications of these for classroom practice.
Each application is considered on an individual basis to determine suitability. However, applicants are typically expected to have a 1st degree in language or education, a teaching qualification, and a minimum of 2 years full-time relevant teaching experience. For applicants whose 1st language is not English: IELTS: overall score 6.5, no less than 6.0 in any section; TOEFL IBT: overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking; or Pearson Test of English: 58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills; Cambridge English: Advanced and Proficiency: overall score 176 with a minimum score of 169 in any section; applicants with lower English language test scores may be able to take pre-sessional English at INTO University of Exeter prior to commencing their programme.
Core modules: principals of language learning for TESOL; language awareness for TESOL; preparing for TESOL enquiry. Optional modules: foreign language testing and assessment; issues in English language teaching; developing materials for TESOL; developing language teachers; developing an appropriate language teaching methodology; teaching English to young learners; teaching and researching English for academic purposes; new technologies in language learning. MEd dissertation.
Assignments vary from module to module and involve a variety of assessment methods, including written essays and oral presentations.
