Middle East and Islamic Studies

This course is highly flexible in that it enables students to select 75 credits of options, followed by a 60 credit dissertation on an approved subject of their choice (thereby creating their own personalised programme). This award is very well suited to students who need to study for the specific requirements of an employer, as well as those who welcome the opportunity to create an individualised study pathway.

Entry requirements

Course modules

Some examples of compulsory modules: research methods Middle Eastern and Islamic studies; dissertation; studying the contemporary Middle East; Islamic culture and civilisation; approaches to Middle East and Islamic studies: states, societies and identities. Some examples of optional modules: state and society in the Middle East; independent reading course; nationalisms in the Middle East; the Middle East before 1945; the Middle East since 1945; the history and historiography of the Palestine question; Palestinian politics after Oslo; themes and conflicts in Iranian history and culture; the revolution of 1978/79, the Islamic republic and the politics of contemporary Iran; approaches to Middle East and Islamic studies: states, societies and identities; Islamic culture and civilisation; studying the contemporary Middle East; Sufism, Islamic mysticism and devotional life.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: essays, presentations, group work, 15,000-word dissertation.
