Middle East Studies

This programme is designed to develop research skills within the field of Middle East studies. The core training will be in social scientific philosophy and methodology. The programme is designed to develop students understanding of the history and evolution of the Middle East as a region, as well as introducing approaches to studying the area, and specialised quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques appropriate to this specialism. This programme also forms part of the ESRC South West Doctoral Training Centre - a hub of world-class social sciences research.

Entry requirements

Course modules

Details at any time may be obtained from the programme website. Some examples of the compulsory modules are as follows; Research Methods Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies; Philosophy of the Social Sciences; Qualitative Methods in Social Research; Applied Quantitative Data Analysis and State and Society in the Middle East.
Some examples of optional modules are as follows; International Relations of the Middle East; The Middle East Since 1945; The Middle East Since 1945 ; Gender and Identity in the Middle East: Part I Constructing Selves in Social and Political Contexts; Arabic for Beginners and Elementary Persian.

Assessment methods

This programme is assessed through a combination of essays, presentations, group work and the dissertation.
