Management

The programme provides training in a range of research techniques and methods used in the social sciences, and an appreciation of their theoretical and philosophical underpinnings. Students develop critical thinking skills through specialist management and organisation studies options. The research-based dissertation enables students to develop a critical academic argument on their chosen topic, with the support of a supervisor. They also learn how to implement research techniques to critically evaluate management problems and research debates. This programme forms part of the ESRC South West Doctoral Training Centre - a hub of world-class social sciences research.

Entry requirements

Normally a 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in 1 of the social sciences. Applications are also welcome from candidates with managerial experience or relevant professional qualifications.The majority of candidates will be expecting a 1st or 2.1 degree, however, applications will be considered where there is evidence of exceptional performance in modules relevant to the programme of study, extended relevant work experience or professional qualifications. International applicants will need to meet the English language requirements.

Recent examples of compulsory modules are as follows; Business and Management Research Skills ; Methods and Techniques for Independent Research; Philosophy of the Social Sciences and Current Research Issues in Management.
Some examples of recent optional modules are as follows; Advanced Marketing Seminars; Consumption, Markets & Culture; Entrepreneurship: New Venture Development; Brand Design ; Managing Operations; Strategic Innovation Management; Strategy; Understanding Consumer Behaviour; International Human Resource Management; Marketing Strategy and Principles of International Business.

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed through a mixture of group work, coursework, project work and examinations.
