This programme is suited to anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge of accounting and finance, and who wants to enter a career in financial markets; either as an analyst, as a professional accountant, or as a preparation for further research at PhD level.Students develop their ability to apply and evaluate the various models and methods that practitioners use to solve practical accounting and financial problems.
A good Honours degree in a subject where the majority of modules have been taken in Finance, Accounting, Economics and Mathematics. This must include at least 4 accounting modules and should include Cost or Management Accounting and Financial Accounting (preferably at an advanced level). The majority of our candidates are expecting a 1ST or 2.1 degree, however, we do consider all applications where there is evidence of exceptional performance in modules relevant to the programme of study, extended relevant work experience or professional qualifications. We also consider applicants with significant relevant work experience and professional qualifications such as ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS and CIMA.
Core: applied empirical accounting; advanced financial accounting; fundamentals of financial management; financial modelling; dissertation; advanced management accounting; corporate governance, reporting and regulation; principles of international taxation. Optional modules: topics in financial economics; derivatives pricing; domestic and international portfolio management; banking and financial services; advanced corporate finance; international financial management; corporate finance and governance; mergers, management buyouts and other corporate reorganisations; alternative investments; portfolio investment simulation; corporate governance, reporting and regulation; principles of international taxation.
Modules are assessed through a mixture of group work, coursework, project work and examinations; the weighting of each of these components will vary according to the academic requirements of the module. Examinations are normally held at the end of the module, in January and May/June.
