Celtic Studies

This course specialises in the medieval Celtic languages, literature, history and archaeology covering the whole span of the Middle Ages from the 6th to the 16th centuries.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, GPA 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject unless otherwise specified. Note: a short (1 paragraph) statement of interest is also required.

Course modules

Core courses: Skills and scholarship in Celtic studies (semester 1); themes and debates in Celtic studies (semester 2); introduction to early Gaelic (old and middle Irish); introduction to middle welsh.
Optional courses from a wide range of specialist courses including; Celtic art: an interdisciplinary approach; Celtic place-names of Scotland; critical issues in early Gaelic literature; Finn in Gaelic literature; legal traditions in medieval Ireland and wales; literacy in Celtic culture and society: an interdisciplinary approach; picts: an interdisciplinary approach; special option (semester 1 or 2) this is a course of guided reading, directed by a specialist in a field of a choice, designed to produce a research essay of c. 5,000 words.
