Aeronautical Engineering

The Master's in Aeronautical Engineering focuses on advanced engineering subjects required for understanding modern design of fixed-wing aircraft.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are normally a 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent (eg GPA of 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject unless otherwise specified. Additionally, a sound understanding of programme relevant core engineering principles, such as mathematics, is expected and must be demonstrated in a 2.1 or equivalent in core subject components from the applicant's Honours degree. International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of pre-Master's courses.

Course modules

Semester 1 courses (5 chosen): aerospace control 1; aircraft flight dynamics; navigation systems; space flight dynamics 1; viscous shear flows. Semester 2 courses (5 chosen): autonomous vehicle guidance systems; composites airframe structures; introduction to aeroelasticity; introduction to computational fluid dynamics; introduction to wind engineering; robust control 5; spacecraft systems 2. Core course (throughout semester 1 and 2): aerospace design project.

Assessment methods

Modes of delivery of the MSc in Aeronautical Engineering include lectures, seminars and tutorials and allow students the opportunity to take part in lab, project and team work. Students attend taught courses and take part in laboratory-based assignments and field visits. Students are further assessed in the coursework, report writing and oral presentations. To complete the MSc degree, students must undertake a project worth 60 credits. Students can choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Aeronautical Engineering. Alternatively, should the student have their own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.
