Equality and Human Rights

This course examines equality and human rights in a social context, empirically and theoretically, while also providing advanced training in sociology and social science research methodology to fulfil Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) postgraduate research training requirements. Students examine key debates and theories concerning equality and human rights and how they have influenced social policy and practice, develop a critical understanding of sociology and gain skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, Grade Point Average 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject. For applicants whose 1st language is not English, the University sets a minimum English language proficiency level, being IELTS overall 6.5 score (no sub-test less than 6.0), or equivalent scores in another recognised qualification.

Core modules: equality and human rights; qualitative methods; social science statistics 1; options; gender and society; sexualities and society; racism and modernity; religion in society; class and stratification; the disabling society; poverty and equality in the global economy.
