Geography and Environmental Sciences

The School of Natural and Social Sciences offers postgraduate research supervision across a range of geographical topics. It is also possible to undertake research that draws upon expertise in cognate fields such as biological sciences, social sciences and countryside and community. Environmental change research topics include: climate and environmental change from the mid-Pleistocene to late Holocene; environmental reconstruction using luminescence dating, and pollen analysis; fluvial geomorphology; river channel dynamics using GIS; flood mitigation; landscape evolution using image analysis and physical modelling; remote sensing of glacial change; species' response to climate change; conservation ecology, and use of palaeoecology and DNA analysis to inform conservation management.. Globalisation and development research topics include: the city in the developing world including urban and periurban agriculture; migration policy, and migrant groups including seasonal agricultural labour; democracy in global governance; representation, development and change in Africa; population health, wellbeing and ageing.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree of Upper 2nd Class or above from a UK university, or an equivalent qualification, is normally required in a subject area relevant to the chosen research topic; in exceptional circumstances, applications from non-graduates with experience of undertaking research or graduates who wish to work in a new subject area are considered; registration is usually for MPhil or MRes or MA/MSc by Research with the possibility of transfer to PhD; candidates with a Master's degree in a relevant subject that contains appropriate research methods training may register for PhD directly.
