Develop your critical thinking skills in order to enrich your practice as an Special Educational Needs (SEN) Coordinator on this government-approved course for part-time learners. Research-active staff and students from a wide variety of educational settings enrich the learning experience. Gain the National Award for SEN Coordination (a statutory requirement for new SENCO s in post since 2009) on this government-approved course. You will be supported by highly-experienced and research-active teaching staff who are attuned to the needs of part-time students. From content delivery to the way in which staff and students communicate, the course is designed to suit those who are currently working. Students come from a wide range of settings, from Early Years to Higher Education, and are encouraged to bring their own professional experiences into the learning environment. Current research underpins the teaching on this dynamic course, which combines theory with practical exercises. Students also benefit from guest speakers, both the university's own alumni and professionals from different areas of education.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent; or a relevant postgraduate or professional qualification and/or work experience. This course is not available for international students.

Course modules

The course comprises two 30-credit Master's level modules and critically considers current issues, debates, theories, recent research findings and the practical implications of special educational needs provision. The first module concentrates on the contexts for SEN/D practice at the present time and the influence of this on developing school policy and practice.

Assessment methods

Assessment via one written assignment for each module.
