Youth Work

If you want to be a professionally qualified youth worker, this course is for you. This profession has a substantial historical and practical base which is continually evolving in tandem with the many changes in the relevant youth work sectors. The university youth work staff have been central to such changes and have designed this course so that students will understand the context and acquire the knowledge and skills required to be successful in this important area. A key element of the course is understanding youth work in different settings. The professional element of the course is achieved via the postgraduate diploma either fulltime over one year or part-time over two years which involves practising in several placement settings. These could potentially involve your workplace or placements can be found for you. With a high level of support, these placements will develop your practice knowledge and skills suitable for a professional youth work practitioner.

Entry requirements

Applicants require an Honours degree. However, students with lesser awards will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants will need a satisfactory DBS disclosure and 100 hours of previous experience working with 13-19 year olds. All students will be interviewed.

Assessment methods

Academic content will be assessed via assignments (no examinations). Practice elements will be assessed via observations, reports critical discussions and portfolios.
