Education

With more than 40 academic staff, the School of Education is able to supervise across a broad range of topics. There are particular strengths in curriculum studies, early years, leadership and diversity in education, environmental education and professional development. Some recent research completions include: the application of constructivist learning theory to homework practice; how coursework and exam-based study affect the learning of pupils in secondary science education; primary trainee teachers' choice of mathematical examples for learning and the relationship with mathematics subject knowledge; pedagogy to enhance teaching and learning in science and environmental education within initial teacher training students; and the role of support workers in the learning of disabled students in higher education.

Entry requirements

To join the PhD programme directly, students normally need a UK Master's, or an equivalent qualification, in a subject area relevant to the proposed research topic; to join the MRes programme, students need an UK Bachelor's of Upper 2nd Class or above, or an equivalent qualification; on successful completion of the MRes (approximately 12 months full-time), students can normally move on to the PhD programme; however, the University considers applications from candidates from different backgrounds who demonstrate appropriate research experience and achievement.
