The programme draws on the strengths of Greenwich�s History team and the Greenwich Maritime Institute to provide students with an exciting range of optional areas of study, including public history, gender, empire, exploration, war, and maritime history. This programme has been designed for graduates who may be considering embarking on a career in teaching, academic research, or in the UK�s vibrant heritage sector, where a postgraduate qualification considerably enhances employability. The range of student aspirations is recognised in the optional work placement module, assessed by creative research outputs such as an exhibition or a filmed documentary.
An undergraduate degree at upper 2nd class Honours or above in a relevant discipline (a lower 2nd class Honours degree may be considered in exceptional circumstances), or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to a high honours degree in a related area, or professional experience, research in a professional capacity or publication in journals or presentation at conferences/ seminars. Applicants should also have teaching experience. Non-English speakers should havea minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill).
Modules include: The history of the present; historical research methods and practice; global travel, exploration and empire 1600-1911; gender in early modern England; histories of feminism; London at war; work placement; empire and war; public history; environmental history and the sea (the British Isles, 1800-today; Britannia�s trident (war trade and empire 17th-19th centuries); Britannia challenged (20th century international maritime history.
Assessments includes research essays, projects, proposals, source analysis, weekly reflective logs and oral presentations. Each student will also complete a 15,000 word dissertation based on primary research on a topic of their choice, in consultation with their supervisor.
