English (Literary London)
This programme offers students the opportunity to study the rich and varied literary imaginings of London. As well as covering London�s literary history from the time of Shakespeare to the present day, this exciting programme encompasses cinematic, postcolonial and documentary constructions of, and responses to the city. It appeals to those who wish to extend their knowledge of literature, explore alternative approaches and perspectives, and broaden their understanding within an interdisciplinary, comparative and international context. Programme design is structured yet flexible. Courses are taught in weekly seminars that focus on the close study of literary, theoretical and cultural texts.
An undergraduate degree classification of 2.1 or above in a relevant discipline (in exceptional circumstances a 2.2 may be considered); or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an Honours degree in a related area; or professional experience, research in a professional capacity or publication in journals or presentation at conferences/seminars; or other qualifications and/or experience that demonstrate that a candidate possesses knowledge and skills commensurate with the standard of a high Honours degree. Students educated in a language other than English should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
Modules include: Imagining the city: text, theory, writing; foundations for postgraduate study: theory and research methods; the London stage; queer street: the city as performance space; London crime fiction; Augustan and romantic period London; gothic London: ennui, paranoia and apocalypse; London in the age of Shakespeare.
Assessment is through an essay portfolio, oral presentations, and a dissertation.
