**Interested in studying an MA in TESOL? We are now accepting applications for our MA in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages.** The MA TESOL has been designed for practising language teachers who wish to further develop their existing career, or for those who wish to build a new career in teaching English as a foreign or second language. As well as contributing to professional development, it can enhance career prospects and pathways in public and private education, both in the UK and overseas. This programme provides opportunities for students to gain an in-depth understanding and application of current theories, research and practice in language learning and teaching. Students also pursue their own interests and/or professional needs in the preparation of their dissertation. **Learning Outcomes** The Programme provides opportunities for students to achieve the following learning outcomes: * Advanced knowledge of differing theoretical approaches to contemporary theories of second language acquisition * Key methodologies and techniques in language teaching and learning * An understanding of contemporary issues in TESOL * Advanced understanding of the design of language tests and test evaluation * The construction of effective language teaching materials * Advanced knowledge of pedagogical English grammar * Advanced knowledge of English phonetics and phonology * An understanding of cross-linguistic variation and its relevance to language teaching * A theoretical perspective on the use of ICT in language learning and teaching * The ability to carry out a sustained piece of independent research on a relevant topic.

Entry requirements

MA: An undergraduate degree at 2:1 or above in a relevant humanities or social sciences subject (or non-UK equivalent). Other areas may also be considered as suitable. Applicants may be invited for an interview. Some experience of language teaching would be beneficial, but it is not a requirement for entry onto the programme. **Please note that the MA TESOL is an academic programme of study and not a teacher training course. Therefore, it does not offer teaching practice as a part of this programme.**

Students are required to study the following compulsory modules. * Reseach Methods (30 credits) * Dissertation (TESOL SLLT)(60 credits) (60 credits) * Contemporary Theories in SLA (15 credits) * Key Issues in TESOL (15 credits) * Materials Development & Language Testing (15 credits) * Pedagogical Grammar (15 credits) * Language variation and acquisition (15 credits) * The Use of ICT in Second Language Learning and Teaching (15 credits)

Assessment methods

Students are assessed through a range of assessment methods depending on the course. These may include essays, oral presentations, poster presentations, problem sets, portfolio tasks, research plans, and a final dissertation. Please see the individual course pages above for further information.
