Secondary Education (Design and Technology)
The extended version of this course is for students who would like to teach the subject, but whose degree does not contain sufficient elements of the design and technology curriculum. This programme includes university-based (60 days) and school-based elements (120 days). These elements enable student teachers to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to teach in secondary schools. Practical teaching experience is gained in 2 main schools, where student teachers are allocated a mentor who is a subject specialist teacher and offers feedback and guidance. Students are formally assessed against the national statutory requirements for Qualified Teacher Status. Students are offered a choice of specialisms, each covering a main teaching subject. Aims of the programme: Developing practical knowledge and theoretical understanding to work with secondary school children, developing knowledge of the National Curriculum, widening individual skills, expertise and knowledge of the specialist subject.
