Secondary Education (Biology)
The course comprises of school placement, subject specialist and professional learning modules. Trainees who achieve a Master's level are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate of Education, those who achieve at level 6 are awarded the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.
Minimum 2.2 (Hons) degree required awarded by a UK university (or equivalent) with at least 50 per cent in biology. GCSE English language and mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent). Recent (last 2 years) work experience in a state secondary school of at least 10 days. Professional Skills Tests in literacy and numeracy and an interview to assess personal suitability for teaching. Applicants with a biology Honours degree are considered if they have achieved A-level chemistry or physics or have enough components of them in their 1st degree supported by AS-level. Applicants with a 3rd in their 1st degrees are considered if they hold a postgraduate degree in biology. Applicants with overseas qualifications must have them validated by NARIC before applying.
To pass the course, trainees need to achieve all the Teachers� Standards on placement to the level required to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and pass 2 written assignments.
