Practice of English Language Teaching

The course is aimed at graduates in English, with little or no teaching experience, who want an initial preparation course in English language teaching at postgraduate level; on successful completion of this students can graduate with a postgraduate diploma; to gain the MA students write a dissertation; the course covers: a practical introduction to the teaching of English; a teaching and learning focused study of English, including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, texts and genre; a study of the extent and range of uses of English; theoretical insights into the learning and teaching of languages; methods of English language teaching and practical teaching sessions, including needs analysis, syllabus design, materials production and evaluation, use of technology and testing; research methods: preparation for research and dissertation.

Entry requirements

Honours degree or equivalent in a field related to language; English; or education; where English is not 1st language IELTS score of 6.5 is required (with at least a band 6 in writing).

Assessment methods

2 taught semesters are assessed by coursework and examinations; dissertation.
