Healthcare Management

The overall aim of the course is to educate individuals as managers and improve the quality of management as a profession within healthcare settings. The course aims to develop in individuals an integrated and critical understanding of management and organisations and to prepare them for effective roles within them. There are 4 main purposes: the advanced study of the leadership management of organisations and the changing external context in which healthcare organisations operate; preparation for and/or development of a career in healthcare management by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level; development of the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues, both systematically and creatively to improve business and management practice; enhancement of lifelong learning and personal development so far as to be able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to healthcare management and society at large.

Entry requirements

Honours degree, or equivalent, i.e. a professional qualification, from a British or overseas institution and; a minimum of 3 years appropriate management or business experience, working in a health or social care context. Applicants with significant management experience may be admitted to the course without a degree or equivalent qualifications if they can demonstrate their potential to meet the learning requirement of the programme.

Course modules

Modules include: personal and professional development; leading teams; managing and developing activities; continued professional development; strategic thinking in a healthcare context; corporate governance; contemporary issues for healthcare managers; postgraduate dissertation proposal; postgraduate dissertation; organisational report on action learning project.

Assessment methods

Assessment includes individual assignments and reports, group projects, learning contracts, portfolios, presentations and a professional dissertation. The mix of assessment methods is designed to promote personal and professional development in a manner which is both rigorous and transparent.
