Embedded Systems Engineering

This course focuses on the fast-growing and challenging area of embedded systems, a rapidly expanding area of modern technology. Its impact and potential are increasingly evident in devices used in commerce and industry. There are expanding applications with enhanced features for end users in industry, instrumentation, health care, entertainment, science and robotics. This course offers a progression route for graduates who studied electrical and electronic engineering, control systems, computer science or related disciplines with knowledge of immediate relevance to industry. It is also suitable for more experienced engineers, who require a course to enhance their technical and managerial education. The industrial relevance of the course is of prime importance; it offers flexibility in the subjects studied whilst retaining coherence. You will be taught through structured lectures, tutorials and practical lab based sessions. For practical sessions, you will work in our modern embedded systems lab which is equipped with development tools and software design packages and the electronics lab for manufacturing boards with surface mount components. The student-centred delivery of the course allows you to take greater control of your learning through on-line learning material and exercises, the Internet and by interactive demonstrations.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement for a Master's degree is an Honours degree or equivalent qualification in electronic engineering or related disciplines. Other qualifications and/or experience that demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at Honours degree standard may also be acceptable. The normal entry requirement for the Postgraduate Diploma course is a degree or equivalent qualification. A lower level qualification together with appropriate experience or, exceptionally, substantial industrial experience alone may also be acceptable.

Course modules

Core modules: Planning an advanced technical project; digital design; parallel computer architectures computer clusters; project management; advanced technical project; major research project.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations, reports on lab experiments, lab based assignments and project work.
