Secondary Education (Music)

This is a one year full-time course, after completion students are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status with which they can then become a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). The Postgraduate Certificate includes modules at Master�s level which may count towards a further Master�s award. The University agrees the award whilst students train.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree of 2.2 or above in a related subject which is at least 50%music content; GCSE grade C, or equivalent in Mathematics and English; the ability to speak, read and write well in English; a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and medical check. Applicants need not do anything before applying. Applicants must pass 2 professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy before starting the course. Applicants must have registered for the tests before being offered an interview. A satisfactory interview. Applicants are required to have recent experience of a secondary school other than the one attending as a pupil, and provide a written report of this experience. Applicants with different/older qualifications should not be deterred from applying as applications from people with different backgrounds are welcomed. Applicants with appropriate industrial and/or commercial experience are encouraged to apply. Overseas applicants with degrees will need to provide a full transcript of the award, along with details of the marking scheme used.

Course modules

The practice of teaching: induction; specialist subject development; application; consolidation; special educational needs and inclusion; curriculum development.

Assessment methods

Completion of 2 written assignments at Master's level, 3 personal reports, and a personal subject audit, covering both subject and professional development as a teacher. Students also produce evidence to support the completion of all the QTS standards.
