The Postgraduate Certificate includes modules at Master�s level which may count towards a further Master�s award. The award is agreed whilst applicants train. The PGCE programmes are designed to develop subject specialist knowledge alongside hands-on classroom experience.
1st degree at 2.2 or above in a related subject which is at least 50 per cent Honours level mathematics. A-level mathematics or related subject with high mathematics content. GCSE grade C pass or equivalent in Mathematics and English. Ability to speak, read and write well in English. Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and medical check. There is a charge (currently �44). Applicants need not do anything before applying. Applicants must have passed skills tests in literacy and numeracy before starting the initial teacher training course. Please note applicants must have registered for the tests before the University offers an interview. All conditions must be met by 31 August 2015 (please allow extra time for Skills Test retakes). Applicants are required to have some recent experience of a secondary school other than the one attended as a pupil and to provide a written report on their experience. These are the usual entry requirements; however those with different or older qualifications should not be deterred from applying as the University welcomes people from different backgrounds. Trainees with appropriate industrial and/or commercial experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants with a degree awarded overseas will need to provide a full transcript of the award, along with details of the marking scheme used by the awarding institution.
Modules include: The practice of teaching (induction); specialist subject development; the practice of teaching (application); the practice of teaching (consolidation); special educational needs and inclusion; curriculum development.
There are no formal examinations but there may be some classroom knowledge activities. Students complete 2 written assignments at Master's level, 3 personal reports, and a personal subject audit. These cover both subject and professional development as a teacher. Students produce evidence to support the completion of all the QTS standards.
