Secondary Science with Biology

The Postgraduate Certificate includes modules at Master�s level which may count towards a further Master�s award. The University agrees the award whilst students train. This PGCE course is designed to develop an understanding of the pedagogy of biology teaching along with practical experience in schools.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree at 2.2 or above in a relevant science subject. 2 science A-levels at a minimum of grade C or equivalent. GCSE grade C pass or equivalent in mathematics and English. Ability to speak, read and write well in English. A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and medical check. There is a charge (currently �44). Applicants need not do anything before applying. Applicants must have passed skills tests in literacy and numeracy before starting initial teacher training course. Please note applicants must have registered for the tests before The University offers an interview. Applicants are required to have some recent experience of a secondary school other than the 1 attended as a pupil and to provide a written report on their experience. All conditions must be met by 31 August 2015 (please allow extra time for Skills Test retakes). These are the usual entry requirements; however those with different or older qualifications should not be deterred from applying as the University welcomes people from different backgrounds. Trainees with appropriate industrial and/or commercial experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants with a degree awarded overseas will need to provide a full transcript of the award, along with details of the marking scheme used by the awarding institution.

Course modules

Modules: The practice of teaching (induction); specialist subject development; the practice of teaching (application); the practice of teaching (consolidation); special educational needs and inclusion; curriculum development.

Assessment methods

There are no formal examinations but there may be some classroom knowledge activities. Students complete written assignments at Master's level, personal reports, and a subject audit. These cover both subject and professional development as a teacher. Students also produce evidence to support the completion of all the QTS standards.
