Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (General)
The course offers students the opportunity to learn about all the National Curriculum subjects with a focus on teaching and learning in Key Stage 1 (age range 5-7) and Key Stage 2, the 5 to 9 age range.
A minimum of a grade C in English language, mathematics and a science subject at GCSE level or equivalent, although a grade B is preferable. These qualifications are required upon application. Acceptable science courses at GCSE level include physics, chemistry or biology. A dual award science is also acceptable. Core and Additional science each at grade C and a merit or higher in OCR science are accepted. In total, a minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A-C. Applicants must have been awarded (or be about to be awarded) a 1st degree (upper 2nd class or above) in a relevant subject. This could be a National Curriculum subject or an area relevant to early childhood education. However other subjects at degree level will be considered. Applicants must justify the relevance of their degree to the early years and primary age phase in their personal statement. A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure check. There is a charge for this which is currently �44 (subject to change). Applicants must not previously have been barred from teaching or working with children and must not have a criminal record. Applicants must: meet the Secretary of State�s requirements for health and physical capacity to teach; demonstrate the intellectual and academic capabilities needed to meet the required QTS standards; have passed skills tests in literacy and numeracy before starting their initial teacher training course. Please note applicants must have registered for the tests before being offered an interview. demonstrate that you can read effectively and are able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English; possess the appropriate professional qualities, attitudes and values expected of a teacher. Prior to application applicants should have spent at least one week in a Key stage 1 (5-7 years) setting and one week in Key Stage 2 children, preferably in the 5 - 9 age range. Each week of experience should be a continuous block and applicants must obtain a reference from 1 school and present it at the interview. Applicants must provide 1 academic reference. Applicants about to graduate or who have graduated within the past 3 years their main referee must be a university or college lecturer who can comment on academic ability. Applicants who acquired a degree overseas, will need to provide a full transcript of the award, along with details of the marking scheme used. Interviews take place at a school and at the University. All conditions must be met by 31 August 2015 (please allow extra time for Skills Test retakes).
Assessment is through coursework and assessment of practical teaching.
