Social Work

This is a professional qualifying course in social work and is intended for graduates who are committed to a future career in social work. It is designed to prepare students to work in all social care settings (residential, field, day care, healthcare and education) and sectors (statutory, voluntary and private) and in multidisciplinary settings and work teams.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a 2nd Class Honours degree (usually a 2.1) in a relevant subject or submit an academic reference indicating they expect to obtain a 2nd Class Honours degree. Applicants should have mathematics and English GCSE at Grade C or above (or equivalent). Applicants educated outside the UK are required to have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at a score of 7.0 with no lower than 6.5 in any single component. Applicants are required to complete a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to the start of the course. The provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act do not apply to this course and they must declare any criminal conviction or police cautions at interview. Applicants will be shortlisted on the strength of their written applications and must show how they have used previous experience (for example paid, voluntary, personal and educational) to help them develop some knowledge and understanding of the tasks and roles undertaken by social workers.

Course modules

Year 1: assessment; care and support planning in social work; 1st practice placement; law and social work; readiness for practice; reflective practice; social work knowledge and interventions; working together with service users and carers. Year 2: critical reflective practice; final practice placement; social work with adults; social work with children.

Assessment methods

Individual and group presentations, essays, reports, case studies, digital stories, direct observations, reflective writing, coursework and portfolio work.
