Advanced Safeguarding

This course is designed to enable health and social work professionals and others in the safeguarding fields to analyse and evaluate the current state of knowledge, UK policy and practice in this area. The course aims to link theory, research and policy. Students consider the nature of child welfare and safeguarding, multidisciplinary approaches and integrated theoretical and practice frameworks. Study emphasises anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice and empowerment. The course also take into consideration agency mandates and individual learning and practice needs and interests.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree with 1 year's post-qualifying experience in the field of safeguarding. Applicants without a degree level qualification or equivalent might be required to undertake preparatory work and/or a written assignment to demonstrate their ability to study at postgraduate level. International applicants must have a 1st degree and 2 years experience of working in child protection services. For applicants whose 1st language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 6.0 in any single component, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent. You may be eligible to gain accreditation for your prior learning towards this course.

Course modules

Modules include: Consolidation in professional practice; reflections on practice (child welfare and safeguarding); methods for inquiry (postgraduate social work); dissertation; assessment and intervention in child safeguarding; contemporary issues in children's safeguarding; legal framework of child welfare and safeguarding; safeguarding children: policy and organisational context; contemporary issues in health and social care; international perspectives in health and social care; safeguarding; risk; legislation and policy.

Assessment methods

Assessment involves written assignments, a work-based assessment and a dissertation.
