Health Studies (Long-term Conditions)

This course is aimed at all health and social care professionals who are currently working in an area where they are care for patients with long-term conditions. Students have the opportunity to study 1 long-term condition in depth and will develop an understanding of the relevant principles and policies.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be a health or social care professionals, registered with a professional body such as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Have at least 12 months post-registration employment in an area where they have cared for patients with a variety of long term conditions. An Honours degree or evidence of working at an advanced level. Students educated outside the UK are required to have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at a score of 6.5 with no lower than a 6.0 in any single component.

Course modules

Modules include: critical appraisal of research literature; long term conditions; research project preparation; project (health related). Optional modules: advanced practice in diabetes care; implementing change in professional practice; independent and supplementary prescribing; self management and behaviour change; international perspectives in health and social care; leadership and management for healthcare practice; leg ulcer management (distance learning); mental capacity and mental disorder; obesity prevention and management; policy and advanced professional practice; practice development; self development 1; self development 2; spirituality in health and social care; supporting diabetes self care; supporting learning in practice (masters); supporting learning in practice (m) (distance learning); conversion to independent prescribing for physiotherapy/podiatry supplementary prescribers; tissue viability and wound management (distance learning); utilising problem based learning.

Assessment methods

Action plans, oral examinations, practical examinations and written examinations, learning contracts, reports and written essays.
