Health Studies (Advancing Midwifery Practice)
This course is designed to provide experienced midwives with the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification, by studying a series of modules that are relevant and applicable to contemporary midwifery practice. Students enhance and extend their existing knowledge and skills, for example developing their competence in the examination of the newborn.
Registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or equivalent (international students). 12 months post-registration employment. An Honours degree at 2.2 or above. Students educated outside the UK are required to have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at a score of 6.5 with no lower than a 6.0 in any single component. Students must be currently working in an area where they have access to newborn babies for the assessment and examination of the newborn module. Applicants must also have a midwifery/paediatric mentor who will support and assess their practice. For the supporting learning in practice module, students require access to learners in clinical practice.
Modules include: critical appraisal of research literature; research project preparation; project (health related). Optional modules: assessment and examination of the newborn; self management and behaviour change; keeping birth normal; leadership and management for healthcare practice; obesity prevention and management; practice development; self development 1; self development 2; supporting learning in practice (masters); supporting learning in practice (masters) (distance learning).
Assessment involves a variety of methods including learning contracts, oral presentations, practical examinations and practice portfolio, reports and written essays.
