English Language and Applied Linguistics

This course is designed to bring your basic knowledge of the description of English language to a high level of competence. It covers a range of topics reflecting staff expertise, including conversation analysis, stylistics, critical discourse analysis and pragmatics. You will be given the chance to engage with cutting-edge research in your area. Any or all of the modules on this course can be taken via the distance learning option, which offers flexibility that will be of particular appeal to those who have special needs of various kinds. There is an emphasis on the practical analysis of language in use, including spoken and written language, and literary or non-literary texts.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in English or a cognate subject. Other relevant qualifications and/or experience may be considered. For applicants whose 1st language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 7.0 overall with no element lower than 6.5, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Descriptive linguistics; dissertation in English language and applied linguistics. Option modules may include (choose 3): Analysing interaction; stylistics; critical stylistics; interpersonal pragmatics.

Assessment methods

You will experience a range of assessment methods, including formative and summative assignments. Summative assessment includes essays, reports of original research, a short-answer test, a presentation and the dissertation. Formative assessment includes participation in group exercises (face-to-face or via webinar), critical evaluation of published texts, and analysis of data. Summative assessment takes place principally at the end of each module. So that we can provide you with early feedback, formative assessment forms part of all modules and is carried out during the course of the term in which the module is delivered. A variety of assessment methods are used dependent on specific student needs.
