Women's and Gender Studies (GEMMA)

Recognised by the EU as a Masters of Excellence, the MA in Women's and Gender Studies (GEMMA) is the first programme of its kind. It carries high prestige within the European Union and is sponsored by the European Commission, which provides a small number of annual, competitive scholarships.

The degree involves a consortium partnership with six other European Universities: Granada (Spain), Oviedo (Spain), Utrecht (Netherlands), Bologna (Italy), Lödz (Poland), Central European University (Budapest, Hungary), and Rutgers (State University of New Jersey). You'll spend one year studying at Hull and all or half of your second year at a selected partner University.

On completion of the course, you'll be awarded with a Masters qualification from both universities, meaning you receive two Masters degrees.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have an Upper 2nd Class degree or equivalent in the social sciences or a cognate discipline, but applicants with other qualifications and relevant experience are carefully considered. Competence in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) is required of international students. Relevant gender-related work experience is an advantage but not essential.

Course modules

Students who complete the programme are enabled to develop an advanced critical knowledge and understanding of contemporary gender theories; demonstrate an advanced understanding of research methods relevant to their particular field of interest in women's and gender studies; analyse the social, ethical and political implications of feminist research; analyse the value of feminist work and more generally gendered analyses within a range of contexts; critically apply a gendered perspective to a wide range of issues and tasks; develop an interdisciplinary approach to the study of gender; negotiate different international university environments.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by means of essays, examinations and other written and oral presentations, as well as the extended 20-30,000 word dissertation.
