University of Kent
Conservation and Tourism
The pathway offers you a critical engagement with the subject of conservation and tourism, not only by exploring the wide range of environmental, social and economic impacts, but also through considering difficult questions that we might ask ourselves about our role as conservationists. For instance, in relation to the underlying values we might introduce into different cultures around the world as part of our mission, and what the historical roots and repercussions of these might be. This pathway is relevant to the work of NGOs, consultancy firms and contractors, tour operators, conservation managers, international agencies and donors. This pathway consists of six months of coursework and five months of research. The optional modules allow you the flexibility to devise a pathway that suits your specific interests, with an appropriate balance between natural and social sciences. In exceptional circumstances, DICE admits applicants without a first degree if their professional career and experience shows academic achievement of a high enough standard.
A good 2nd class Honours degree or higher in a relevant subject, or a good Honours degree in another subject together with relevant practical experience.
Most programmes will require students to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. Students may also have the option to take modules from other programmes so that they may customise their programme and explore other subject areas that interest them.
Assessment is carried out primarily through continuous assessment of coursework with written examinations in some topics; the research dissertation is written up in the format of a paper for publication.
