Biomedical and Healthcare Ethics

The course offers a rigorous grounding in biomedical and healthcare ethics. You will learn about the ethical issues that arise across all areas of medicine and healthcare practice, and can specialise in areas of particular interest. The course is aimed primarily at healthcare professionals, although it also attracts graduates from other disciplines. It is specially designed to enable part-time students to study while continuing their careers. This course is available as both an online distance learning and a campus based course. The syllabus is designed to guide students with little or no experience of studying ethics to the point where they are able to produce a substantial dissertation project. You will study topics including: ethical issues at the beginning and end of life; conscience, codes and professional issues; autonomy, rationality, and psychiatric issues; distributive justice and scarce medical resources; current developments in healthcare ethics. All modules emphasise active participation and independent research. In addition to the taught modules, you will also complete a dissertation, supervised by a member of academic staff.

Entry requirements

Candidates should normally have an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification. Where a candidate is not a graduate, relevant professional experience is taken into account. The key attributes sought are a willingness and ability to think through problems in a reasoned and independent way.
