Critical and Cultural Theory (English studies)
Critical Tteory provides an increasingly vital means of intervening in contemporary cultural debates. The School of English at the University has a wide range of theoretical expertise in areas as diverse as Enlightenment philosophy, Marxism and the Frankfurt School, psychoanalysis, deconstruction, gender, sexuality and queer theory, green critique, postcolonial theory and Holocaust studies. Literary study relies on the insights and methodologies generated by theorists working in a range of overlapping fields, from politics and philosophy to sociology and anthropology. This course enables you to read the work of critical theorists in a more sustained and comparative fashion, explore the history of various critical debates and consider how these debates inform the ways in which we understand the complex relationship between literature, culture and politics. By combining modules from the critical and cultural theory course with other modules from the School, students are able to design their own intellectual journey, a journey that may lead on to doctoral work or to manifold critical and creative paths outside the academy.
An upper 2nd degree (or similar) in English or other approved programme is normally required. Applicants whose first language is not English must fulfil our language requirements of a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS with no grade below 6.0.
You will study 2 core modules plus 3 option modules.
The research project/dissertation module is studied over both Semesters, with students working towards the submission deadline at the end of the course in September. Chosen research projects/dissertation topics must lay within the field of critical and cultural theory.
