Linguistics and English Language Teaching

The course emphasises a theoretical understanding of what language is, and how that might improve language teaching; students study syntax, phonology, pragmatics as well as language teaching methodology and applying methodology; students can choose from a range of options like computer assisted lexicography, 2nd language acquisition and psycholinguistics;

Entry requirements

A 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as linguistics, languages, English, education, psychology, sociology, speech therapy; A Personal Statement that gives the reasons for studying linguistics and English language teaching at Leeds; IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each component).

Course modules

Semester 1: Approaches to linguistics and language acquisition, foundations of syntax. foundations of phonetics and phonology, academic skills in linguistics. Semester 2: Methodology in language teaching, language teaching in practice, research methods in linguistics, option choice. Summer: dissertation.

Assessment methods

These include examinations, coursework, and a dissertation.
