Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for Young Learners
This course provides experienced professionals with an opportunity to develop their knowledge of TESOL and to specialise in the teaching of English to school-aged young learners (TEYL); students gain an in-depth understanding of how children learn languages and the most appropriate approaches and methods for teaching children English; they also develop the knowledge and skills required to develop better practice, reviewing current theoretical concepts and applying them to the evaluation and development of classroom skills, materials and curricula.
A 1st degree or equivalent professional qualification and 2 years' relevant experience are required; overseas candidates must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
Critical study; learning and teaching in TESOL; investigating language for TESOL; research methods in TESOL; teaching languages to young learners; plus optional modules from: The practice of supporting language teacher learning; syllabus design and development for TESOL; planning and managing the TESOL change process - the local level; planning and managing the TESOL change process - the macro level; teaching and learning vocabulary and grammar in a second language; teacher education for TESOL; assessing language learning; materials development for TESOL; classroom discourse; investigating practice in the English language classroom; issues in English for academic purposes.
