Secondary Education (Chemistry)
PGCE Chemistry will provide you with the skills and experience you need to teach chemistry across the full 11-18 Secondary age range. You will train as a science teacher that specialises in Chemistry, so you will also take complementary courses in Physics and Biology. We design our programmes to develop both subject knowledge and teaching techniques, so, in addition to broadening your own chemistry knowledge, you will learn how to make this knowledge accessible and interesting to students by implementing a range of teaching approaches and techniques for managing activities in the classroom.
An undergraduate honours degree from a UK university, or equivalent qualification, of which half the content should relate to Chemistry. If your degree does not relate to Chemistry, then the successful completion of a relevant enhancement and extension course. An A Level or equivalent in Physics or Biology is desirable; Biology and Physics GCSEs (or equivalent) with grade C or higher; Experience of working with the 11-18 age range.
Plus: English language and mathematics GCSEs (or equivalent) with grade C or higher; satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau (or, for candidates from overseas, the equivalent level of clearance); possess the appropriate qualities, values and attitudes expected of a teacher; be able to demonstrate that you are able to communicate effectively in spoken and written English; meet the Secretary of State's requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach. All students starting an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course from September 2013 will be required to pass the Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy before the start of the programme.
Secondary Practical Teaching covers your work placements in 2 partnership schools where you will acquire direct teaching experience. You will have the opportunity to work with teachers and children in both Secondary Key Stages and post-16. Secondary Educational and Professional Studies: Practice, theory and research (1) and Secondary Educational and Professional Studies: Practice, theory and research (2) engage with the contemporary educational and professional issues related to the 11 to 18 age range. You will focus upon the relationship between theory, research evidence and practice, and explore the practical aspects of teaching and learning, such as assessment, differing learning styles, classroom organisation and behaviour management. These 2 modules support and complement the secondary chemistry module and closely link to your placement work. Secondary chemistry reinforces your own knowledge and understanding of chemistry, and investigates the principles and concepts of 'best practice' for teaching, learning and assessment in chemistry. You will acquire the ability to plan, teach and manage chemistry lessons to National Curriculum requirements, and learn to communicate the value of science learning and assess the learning impact of your own lessons.
