Media Industries

This programme will give you an insight into both aspects of the media industries, as you analyse their cultural and economic dimensions. You will explore the full range of media production, from individual bloggers to huge corporations. Taking an international approach, you will study the development of contemporary media to understand current trends. It is a truly interdisciplinary programme, drawing on communication and cultural studies, economics, anthropology, business and management studies, sociology, politics, law, literature, art history and music. Guided by leading researchers in the field, many of whom are involved in our Media Industries Research Centre, you will gain an insight into how television, film, music, online media, newspapers, magazines and advertising are produced, and what it is like to work in each industry.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent; relevant professional experience will be considered in assessing applications. An IELTS score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in any skill area.

Course modules

Core modules:Tthe media industries; media production analysis; dissertation and research methods. Optional modules include: Public relations, culture and society; international film industries; politics and the media; the cultural history of promotional communication; new media cultures; identity, culture and technology; urban narratives; cinematic and photography; theoretical perspectives (culture, creativity and entrepreneurship); cultural policy (models and debates); critical studies in visual communication; television narrative; work placement; feminism, identity and media; innovations in political communication; communication and public opinion; communication and development; cultures of contemporary photography.

Assessment methods

Different methods are used to assess your progress, depending on the modules you choose. These are likely to include essays, video or photography work, presentations or project work and reports.
