New Media

This programme gives you an understanding of the impact of digital technologies on society as well as practical design and production skills. If you do not already have skills in web, game and mobile app design, web development or animation, you will have the chance to develop these or build on your own experience. You will gain an understanding of the social, cultural and economic roles of new media and explore what it is like to work in new media industries. With a range of optional modules to choose from, you will also be able to expand your knowledge into areas such as photography, political communication, feminism in the media or a work placement. Taught by expert practitioners and researchers, you will gain the knowledge and skills to thrive in a fast-paced and growing sector.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree. Relevant professional experience will also be considered. Some experience of new media production is desirable. IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component.

Course modules

Core modules: New media cultures; new media practices; dissertation and research methods or final independent project. Optional modules include: Dissertation and research methods; new media independent project; public relations, culture and society; politics and the media; the cultural history of promotional communication; individual directed study (new media); identity, culture and technology; urban narratives; cinematic and photography; critical studies in visual communication; television narrative; work placement; feminism, identity and media; innovations in political communication; cultures of contemporary photography.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used, depending on the modules you choose. They are likely to include practical projects, essays, reports, group and individual presentations and case studies among others.
