English Language and Linguistics

This course provides a well-structured knowledge base for the systematic study of English linguistics from current synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Students gain appropriate research-based skills (intellectual and practical) to enable them to conduct team-based and independent research projects. In recognition of the variation inherent in undergraduate curricula, this course allows students to build on their existing knowledge while acquiring a foundation in a broad range of linguistic methodologies and approaches. The course helps students to develop an independent approach to learning whereby they become increasingly responsible for organising their own study and formulating individual research questions. This process is invaluable if the student decides to proceed to PhD-level research, but the students also develops transferable skills in written and spoken communication, and in the collection, analysis and evaluation of data of many kinds and from many sources. The ability to present and use this data effectively in response to research questions is invaluable in many professional settings. We also develop the student's ability to reflect critically on the knowledge and understanding they have gained as well as on their own learning and communication skills.
