Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a major growth area in research and industry; hence qualified bioinformaticians are in high demand. This is a course for biological sciences graduates which equips students with the theoretical and practical analytical skills necessary for a career in this multi-disciplinary field. The course culminates in a 3 month project placement in industry, a research institute or university research laboratory.

Entry requirements

A degree with 1st or 2nd Class Honours in biological sciences or a related scientific discipline or an equivalent qualification; also non-graduates with several years' appropriate industrial experience.

Course modules

All years: general computing skills; programming: Java and databases for bioinformatics; programming: Perl for bioinformatics; algorithms for bioinformatics; gene and genome analysis; proteins; steered research projects; independent research projects.

Assessment methods

The taught modules are assessed by in-module assessments and by exams. The research projects are assessed on their independence, initiative and understanding whilst performing the project, plus a final oral presentation and the production of a final report published on the web or the submission of a final dissertation. Additionally, at the end of the course, students are given a viva voce examination by the external examiner.
