A degree with 1st or 2nd Class Honours in biological sciences or a related scientific discipline or an equivalent qualification; also non-graduates with several years' appropriate industrial experience.
All years: general computing skills; programming: Java and databases for bioinformatics; programming: Perl for bioinformatics; algorithms for bioinformatics; gene and genome analysis; proteins; steered research projects; independent research projects.
The taught modules are assessed by in-module assessments and by exams. The research projects are assessed on their independence, initiative and understanding whilst performing the project, plus a final oral presentation and the production of a final report published on the web or the submission of a final dissertation. Additionally, at the end of the course, students are given a viva voce examination by the external examiner.
