Molecular Pathology and Therapeutics of Cancer

This course is designed to equip future scientists and clinicians with the fundamental knowledge to make a difference in the understanding and treatment of cancer. The course enables students to gain a mechanistic understanding of cancer biology and use it to analyse risk, prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of cancer.

Entry requirements

A degree with a 1st or 2nd Class Honours (2.1 or 2.2) in a relevant subject, awarded by a UK university. If the candidate has a degree from an overseas university, it should be at least equivalent to a British 2.2. We also welcome applicants with significant relevant industrial or professional experience and medically qualified applicants with a strong background in molecular biology and/or cell biology.

Course modules

Building on a foundation in cancer cell biology, the translational element of the course considers the design of treatment modalities, including: radiotherapy; mechanisms of action of anti-cancer drugs; therapy resistance; biomarker discovery and use; cancer chemoprevention; anti-cancer target discovery and validation; clinical trials; imaging; cancer epidemiology; biostatistics.

Assessment methods

Assessment is a mix of formal exams and coursework including essays, practical reports, presentations and other written tasks.
