Medical Statistics

This course covers has an emphasis on understanding, applying and adapting theory to real-life circumstances. Students analysis skills will be developed on real medical data sets, using statistical software such as Stata, SAS and WinBUGS. Applicants have the option to specialise, if they want to, in either modern epidemiology (including genetic epidemiology) or health technology assessment.

Entry requirements

The course is intended mainly for students with a good Honours degree of which mathematics/statistics is the main subject, and with a working knowledge of basic probability and statistics. However, applicants with other suitable backgrounds are considered by the course team.

Course modules

Modules include: epidemiology; clinical trials; statistical methods; inference; linear models; generalised linear models; repeated measures; survival analysis; options in Bayesian; survival analysis; multivariate; several projects including major summer research project.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework and exam. Many modules have an assessed coursework element involving the analysis of a real medical data set and the production of a concise written report. There are also mathematical and statistical computing-based coursework's.

Advanced Course studentships from EPSRC and MRC; studentships also provided by several pharmaceutical companies.
