Diabetes

The course provides a wide range of approved, accredited Master's level modules and short courses targeted at the specific needs of post-registration healthcare professionals. Modules focus on clinical, diagnostic and technical skills development whilst also providing an academic underpinning. The modules aim to provide the educational foundation for advanced/autonomous practice.

Entry requirements

Professional with relevant Honours degrees or professional qualifications and clinical experience in the field; applicants with experience and or qualifications in health or social care research practice or management considered and may be interviewed; a written piece of work may be required.

Course modules

Core modules: clinical presentation and management in diabetes; new and advanced therapies in diabetes; foundation research module (MSc and PgDip only); quantitative research and qualitative research methods modules (full MSc only, depending on focus of dissertation). Optional modules: self management in diabetes; insulin management; diabetes and obesity; clinical presentation and management of endocrine disorders; prevention early detection and screening in diabetes; counselling skills in diabetes; adult in-patients.

Assessment methods

Most modules and short courses are delivered by consecutive day blocks, with some having a short break in-between. All accredited modules are assessed by a variety of methods, including written examinations, written assignments and oral presentations. Students who register for the Post Graduate Certificate and complete 3 approved modules are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate. Registration for the Post Graduate Diploma and successful completion of 6 approved modules including a module on research methods will lead to a Postgraduate Diploma. Students who register for the MSc are required to complete 3 core modules and 3 optional modules as well as successful completion of a dissertation. Each module is awarded 20 credits at M level and the 12,000-15,000 dissertation 60 credits at Master's level.
