Applied Health Research

The course enables students to understand how a range of scientific disciplines can be used to structure inquiry and develop the evidence base for applied health research. The course offers a sound grounding in research methods, research practice, and theory as well as developing key transferable skills in research practice, critical appraisal, academic writing, project management, communication and presentation of research, and research management, policy, governance and ethics.

Entry requirements

Candidates normally have a relevant 1st degree (2.1 or higher) or equivalent professional qualification.

Course modules

The course comprises 3 compulsory modules (fundamentals, quantitative and qualitative methods) and an extended dissertation. Students successfully completing only the taught modules are awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Health Research.

Assessment methods

Taught modules use a variety of assessment methods, including oral presentations, assignments and written tests. Participants who successfully complete the 3 taught modules are awarded a Certificate in Applied Health Research. The dissertation is assessed by submission of a protocol, a 15-20,000 word dissertation and an oral examination. Each module is taught in blocks of 2 to 3 teaching days a week, a total of 5 or 6 days per module. Each student is allocated a personal tutor as well as a supervisor for their dissertation.
