Chemical Research (Biological Chemistry)
The course explores the exciting science at the boundary between biology and chemistry and the ways in which the challenges of the worldwide pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are being addressed. It develops research, synthetic and analytical skills for careers in the global pharmaceutical industry or further research leading to a PhD. The course has been tailored to meet the demands of graduating chemists who wish to further their training in chemical research or who wish to use this qualification as a route into a PhD programme. The course is designed to match the professional demand for highly-skilled personnel in industry and provides specific training in core areas of chemistry as well as specialised expertise in Biological Chemistry.
Normally at least a lower 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent in Chemistry or a related discipline. Overseas applicants will, in addition, be required to satisfy an English Language requirement.
Modules include: characterisation methods; synthetic methods; biological chemistry; research methodology; research project.
Assessment is through written exams, marked assignments, assessed problems, oral examination (viva voce), oral presentations and written project reports.
