Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is a scientific discipline that advances knowledge in chemistry, engineering, biology and medicine, and improves human health through multidisciplinary research that integrates the engineering sciences with the biomedical sciences and clinical practice. Over the last few years there has been a major paradigm shift in both Europe and the United States, away from traditional schemes of health care towards health care systems which are much more dependent on technology. This is true in terms of diagnosis, treatment and health care system integration. The skills and training students gain on this courseallows them to apply engineering principles and materials technology to healthcare, to understand the design and manufacture of medical equipment, and to consider ethical principles that underpin medical engineering, regulatory issues and governance.

Entry requirements

2.2 degree (or overseas equivalent) in engineering, physical sciences or medicine with a preference for chemistry and biochemistry graduates. Applicants may be admitted with a lesser academic qualification, if they can demonstrate several years relevant industrial experience. All students must meet the University's English language requirements.

Course modules

Biomedical engineering: theory and practice; bioanalytical technology; nanomedicine; principles of medical equipment design and manufacture; bioethics, regulations and governance; biosensors and diagnostics; professional development; application of core principles.

Assessment methods

Assessment is a mixture of exam, individual/group-directed learning assessments, coursework and practicals. The practical classes are a combination of presentations (formal using PowerPoint, poster sessions, mock court, case studies reviews and role play) to underpin the learning outcomes in a rich stimulating environment. There are assignments on most modules with associated examinations at mid-term and prior to the dissertation.
